Ten tips to set your skin up for success this year

Ten tips to set your skin up for success this year

We know how it goes: every January you vow to stop falling asleep in your makeup, take better care of your skin (like never leaving the house without applying SPF), eat well and exercise. All are great resolutions, but we also know that sticking to them isn't always easy. Follow our top ten tips to make looking after your skin this year a breeze.

1. Establish a skincare routine and stick to it
As Paula herself says: "You can't take care of your skin with just one product." That's why it's essential to follow a routine of cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising (with SPF during the day). This basic routine can be extended with add-ons like a serum or booster, depending on your skin's needs. Go to our routine finder to get a personalised skincare routine in less than 3 clicks.

2. Make a habit of cleansing, even when you're not wearing make-up
It's important to cleanse your face in the morning and evening. Not just to remove makeup, but also dirt and excess sebum. Clean skin receives maximum benefit from skincare products. Use lukewarm water to rinse your face and gently pat it dry with a soft towel, without rubbing. Find a suitable cleanser for your skin type.

3. Say no to soap
A bar of soap is bad news for your skin, because of the residue it leaves behind. This residue can cause dry skin or aggravate it. Instead of bar soap, try using a liquid, gel, lotion or cream-based cleanser to wash your face or a Hair & Body Shampoo for the body. Our water soluble cleansers for face and body are formulated to gently remove impurities, excess oil, and makeup then rinse without leaving a skin-dulling residue. Instead, skin feels smooth, soft, and healthy!

4. Find an exfoliant that works for you
An exfoliant helps to gently remove dead skin cells (without harsh scrubbing). Depending on which exfoliant you choose, it can also help unclog pores, improve acne- or rosacea-prone skin and restore radiance to dull, lacklustre skin. Find out here which exfoliant is suitable for your skin type and make it a part of your routine.

5. SPF: the ultimate anti-ageing ingredient
SPF has anti-ageing benefits unrivalled by any other skincare product. Unprotected exposure to the sun is the main cause of skin ageing, including wrinkles, sagging or uneven-toned skin. So if you want to keep your skin looking as young as possible, it’s important to protect yourself against the sun 365 days a year, even on cloudy days. Read all about SPF.

6. Look after your eyes
It's fine to apply your regular moisturiser underneath your eyes, as long as you're not getting too close to the lower lashes. But if the skin underneath your skin is very fine or if there are wrinkles, you may want to use a daily eye care product such as an eye cream or eye gel in addition to your moisturiser.

7. Something extra?
Want to address a specific skin concern this year? Our boosters contain powerful, highly concentrated ingredients to tackle specific skin concerns. For example: you can brighten uneven skin tone with vitamin C or refine visible pores with niacinamide. It's all about adapting your skincare to your skin's needs.

8. Avoid jar packaging
The most beneficial ingredients for your skin are not stable, which means they won't be effective if exposed to light and air. For example: vitamin C, antioxidants and retinol. Ingredients like these are best kept in packaging that lets in minimal light and air. There is also the issue of hygiene: dipping your fingers into a jar transfers bacteria from your hands into the product, and this causes the ingredients to further deteriorate. In short: always opt for skincare in pumps or opaque tubes with a small opening.

9. Perfume has no place in skincare
We’ve all said "I adore this moisturiser – it smells amazing!” at some point. But unfortunately what your nose likes and what your skin likes are two completely different things. Strongly fragranced products may smell beautiful, but they do absolutely nothing for the health of your skin and can actually irritate it. At Paula's Choice we use everything skin needs, nothing it doesn't.

10. Don't forget about the rest
It may be winter, but don't forget the rest of your body. It has a lot to deal with, thanks to moisture-sapping central heating and freezing cold temperatures outside. Prevent dry legs by treating them every now and then to some body lotion. If you suffer from breakouts or red bumpy skin on your body, your skin may also benefit from our exfoliating body lotions. Hello, smooth summer-ready legs!
